Amateur radio on BBC News

We’re delighted that this piece on amateur radio and our ‘Get on the air to care’ campaign with the NHS has made the front page on the BBC news online website. It has also been tagged for five regional news pages so that should extend the coverage and interest into the regions.

We have a fantastic opportunity now to build on this interest in amateur radio as well the local communities round the clubs and regions.

RSGB - 75th Anniversary of VE Day and VJ Day

To commemorate the 75th anniversary of VE Day and VJ Day, the RSGB has organised the VE/VJ Day amateur radio marathon on the HF bands and 6m using SSB, CW and digital modes. Three special UK call signs GB75PEACE, GB1945PE, GB1945PJ will be on the air from 1-31 May 2020 and 1-31 August 2020.

The special stations have their own QRZ.com pages that give details of the activation schedule. If you wish to participate and transmit using a VE/VJ Day radio marathon call sign, please contact Ian, G0FCT at csc.chair@rsgb.org.uk

Full details of radio marathon and the five awards are on our website: www.rsgb.org/ve-vj-marathon

RSGB and International Nurses Day (IND)

Many thanks indeed to Nicki Pointer for recording a short video message promoting International Nurses Day (IND) and our 'Get on the air to care' campaign with the NHS. Nicki is a Queen's Award winner, the Crowborough Community First Responders' Team Leader as well as a Ward Manager/Senior Sister at Tunbridge Wells Hospital. We are very grateful for your support Nicki.
International Nurses Day (IND) is observed around the world on 12 May each year, to mark the contributions that nurses make to society. This year's IND commemorates the 200th anniversary of Florence Nightingale's birth. ‬    #GOTA2C‬

VDSL reporting

In many areas of the UK, all of the HF amateur bands up to and including 20m are being blighted by interference from VDSL. This is the most widespread means of providing residential broadband internet services in the UK. Ofcom, which is responsible for investigating radio interference, says that it receives, on average, only six (6) complaints per year on the topic and won’t take any significant action.

The RSGB President has written a letter in the May edition of RadCom (which will be landing on doorsteps from 15th April) asking every radio amateur who suffers from VDSL interference to submit a complaint to Ofcom so that we can demonstrate the size of the problem.

In addition to the full RadCom feature by the RSGB’s EMC Committee, RSGB have created a special web page that outlines the process for identifying and reporting your VDSL issues and also offers guidance and software to help you do so. The web page will be live soon so do please take time to look:

The Radio Society of Great Britain, working in partnership with the NHS, is launching a new campaign called “Get on the air to care” to support the emotional health and well being of 75,000 licensed UK radio amateurs – just some of the 3,000,000 worldwide.

Paul Devlin, NHS England Emergency Care Improvement Support Team and RSGB District Representative, says: “Now, more than ever, we need to optimise all modes of communication to help reduce loneliness and isolation within communities. Amateur radio provides a wonderful, unprecedented opportunity to help make this a reality”.

Our new “Get on the air to care” web page includes our launch video so go to www.rsgb.org/gota2c and take a look.
As you get involved in “Get on the air to care” by being more active on the radio, please share your photos, video clips and news with us via comms@rsgb.org.uk and also on social media using the hashtag #GOTA2C

GB1NHS, the UK's National Health Service radio communications station will be on the air as part of this campaign so listen out for it!
