Mills On The Air GB2DWM - May 2024
The HARS SES Team took part in the MOTA weekend with 11 Callsigns working the station equipment. Harsh HF conditions made HF operating a challenge, however we did get some VHF contacts logged.
The warm sunny weather and location made the weekend very enjoyable.

GBØWYT - RAFARS Airfields on the Air - RAF Wyton - April 2023
On Friday 14 April 23 a Team from HARS assembled for the purpose of putting on a Special Event Station GBØWYT for the RAFARS Airfields on the Air event at Royal Air Force Wyton, Cambridgeshire. The original venue for the event which we have used many times before was going to be Building 45 which is the Headquarters of No 2331 (St Ives) Squadron ATC however the Event Organiser - David MØSKT (RAFARS 4789) was informed that the building that was going to use had a total mains electric failure which was diagnosed down to the mains cable having to be replaced; due to it being a Friday no one was available that could find us an alternative building to use at short notice. A ‘Plan B’ was put together so that we could at least operate for one day at a push and that would be out under canvas; so with some phone calls and an email request to one of the landowners that is local to the end of the 08/26 runway at Wyton a suitable site was found which meant the Team could pitch our Club Tent, erect the masts and antennas and do some testing ready for the Saturday, this all proceed well and the day concluded with a mug of tea for everyone - we always take the brew kit! Due to the operating the callsign ‘outside the wire’ at RAF Wyton station we were not allowed to have any Cadets or Staff Members attend this year. So, it was a reasonable start at 8:00am on the Saturday for some of the Team with the calls starting to come in on 40 metres HF, the rest of the Team arriving by 10:00am as David SKT had arranged a staggered start which meant the mid-morning Team could take over the operating and logging from the early operators. Mervyn G4KLE was calling on HF with David M0SKT Logging when David noticed a smell in the location of the radio rack on the desk which smelt like PCB or electronic components, he stopped logging to locate the smell and possible reason for the smell. Gently touching the sides and top of the Icom IC-7200, LDG ATU and 25Amp PSU soon located the source of the smell. The PSU was rather hot so you could not quite bear your hand on the top of the case, further inspection found that the fan had not cut in when it should have been. An emergency station closedown procedure was carried out successfully so we could investigate and swap out the hot PSU. A suitable PSU was located, installed and tested which resulted in being fully operational again on HF.
By using the GB0WYT callsign on the calling frequencies on 2Metres and 70Cms FM and SSB on our Icom IC-821H brought us some good contacts throughout the day; we also found the QSO’s were much longer on the two bands as people wanted to make use of the callsign with several mobile contacts being made which helped them through their journeys.
The day passed quickly with plenty of banter around the tent and a changeover of operators and loggers on both radios regularly meant it was an enjoyable event with plus side on HF when Mervyn G4KLE brought out his CW key and was soon working many stations into the UK and Europe.
By 16:30 the 2 metres and 70Cms station and various other items including the brew kit were disassembled ready for station close down the HF station was closed down with just the tent and HF kit to be derigged. By 17:00 everything was packed away into various cars with a ‘FOD Plod’ instigated by the Team to make sure we left no tent pegs, stakes or rubbish behind when we left the site.

During the weekend of 7th & 8th May 23 HARS Members activated once again the callsign GB2DWM from Duloe Windmill in Eaton Socon, Cambridgeshire for the National Mills on the Air event which is run in May every year. This year is the ninth year of the club operating using the callsign; we were welcomed back to run the station from the grounds at the Mill with permission being granted by the owners Steve and Sandra.
On the Friday before the event HARS Members arrived to set up the G5RV antenna, Masts and Gazebo which gave them a head start for the weekend. The local weather even welcomed us back as well with glorious sun and warmth.
The Team accumulated 247 QSO’s with 199 of them being on HF (SSB Voice and CW), 23 being on VHF/UHF and finally 25
on Data Modes. We worked 22 SES of which 20 were Mills on the Air callsigns. The Team operated on the following
Bands, 80, 40, 20, 10 and 2 and 70cms with working conditions being variable over the two days hence the changes
in the bands.
Thanks go again to the dedicated Team of Club Members who assisted during the weekend either taking the calls, logging or making the tea.
The HARS Club is a growing club which its members have a wealth of knowledge, experience and are from all walks of life, if
you are interested in amateur radio and would like to join the club details can be found at http://hunts-
hams.weebly.com we would be happy to help you and look forward to meeting you.

GB2RRM - Museums on the Air - 18 & 19 June 2023
The intention of the event is to set up amateur radio special event stations at as many of the museums as possible throughout the whole of the world. We would operate on HF, VHF/UHF set up in the museum grounds. The choice of museum at Ramsey allows us to set up full sized wire antennas for HF operating.
The museums taking part over the years have included ships, castles, air museums, Napoleonic forts, pumping stations, wireless museums, racing museums and many others. For the purposes of the event, the word museum is loosely interpreted. There really is no shortage of venues in which such an event can be staged, no matter where in the world you might live.
During the first IMW in 2002 over 80 museums from all over the world took part. The museums varied from tiny local village museums manned by a single lone operator, to some of the world’s most prestigious ones. These were accompanied by a great number of military museum sites, such as HMS Belfast in London, the Battleship New Jersey in the US, RAF museums as well as very many non-military types.

ver the weekend 23 & 24 April 22 Royal Air Force Air Cadets (RAFAC) Personnel had the opportunity to put on a
Special Event Station using the callsign GBØWYT at RAF Wyton, Cambridgeshire. This year marked the 12th year that
the event has taken place on the Station, it's location and history is always a good source of discussion and is popular with radio amateurs who have worked, visited or flown into or from RAF Wyton.
Cadets and Staff from local RAFAC Squadrons and the Event Team from Hunts Hams (HARS) an Amateur radio station
was set up using the Main Drill Hall in No 2331 (St Ives) Squadron Headquarters.
HARS Club members, Cadets and Staff all had a couple of turns at operating and logging the QSO’s during the
weekend with a bonus of the Cadets benefitting from having radio theory and practical sessions interspersed with
operating. Hopefully they may be our future Amateur radio enthusiasts and we wanted them to enjoy the
experience plus gain some useful knowledge over the event.
Overall the total of QSO’s was 243 during the event operating using SSB, CW, FM and various Data Modes this was helped by the excellent and simple set up of the station equipment and our seasoned operators, loggers, Cadets and Staff who attended the event gained useful experience of Amateur radio communications.
